Deliveries and transport
You’ll need: Deliveries, Shipments — if you cannot see these, the module may be switched off for your business or outside your permissions. An administrator can change either.
A delivery is a journey. It groups one or more shipments and records who moved them, in what, and what happened on the way.
What it holds
A delivery number and scheduled date, the shipments it carries, and the origin location.
Who is driving: a driver contact or a plain driver name, and a vehicle registration. Where a third party carries it, a carrier contact or carrier name. Transport cost with its own transport cost currency. Pickup date and pickup time, and notes.
The journey is recorded as events
Picked up, in transit, arrived, completed — or failed with a reason, or cancelled with a reason.
Those states are worth keeping honest for the same reason order fulfilment is: somebody downstream is telling a customer where their goods are, and they can only be truthful if these are.
Failed deliveries are data
Failed, with a reason, is the most valuable state here and the one most often skipped in favour of quietly rescheduling.
A delivery that failed because nobody was there, or the address was wrong, or the vehicle broke down, is a fact worth keeping. Failures with reasons accumulate into something you can act on — a customer who is never in, an area that needs morning slots, a vehicle that keeps breaking.
Rescheduling without recording the failure leaves you with a delivery that eventually succeeded and no memory of the three attempts it took.
Transport cost belongs on the delivery
Recording what the journey cost — and in which currency, since carriers do not always bill in yours — is what lets you know the real cost of serving a customer or a region.
Delivery cost absorbed invisibly into general expenses is the classic way a business discovers, years late, that its most distant customers were never profitable.
Deliveries and shipments
A shipment is what leaves for a customer and is what moves the stock. A delivery is the trip that carries shipments.
One delivery can carry several shipments — one van, six customers. That is the distinction: the shipment is about goods leaving your possession, the delivery is about the vehicle and the journey.
